3D Season
Now that the snow has started to melt, many of us are thinking about getting outdoors. A great way to get outside and start getting prepared for Bowhunting season is to attend a local 3-D Archery Shoot. Let’s discuss some of the benefits of going to 3-D shoots and some items you may need while doing so.
For those of you that don’t shoot much in the offseason, your bow has probably spent the better part of the winter months in the closet.
Now that your equipment is ready to go, get out and shoot a 3-D. Most shoots will consist of 20-40 life-sized animal targets at various unmarked distances. One of the most important improvements you will see will be in your ability to judge yardage. Most shoots are setup in various terrains, up and down hills, through gullies, and in thick timber or vegetation. This can make yardage judging tricky. Knowing the yardage will help you be successful during hunting season.
Attending 3-D shoots promotes ethical Bowhunting. Knowing your maximum effective range is important. If an animal steps out at 50 yards, can you make a clean, ethical shot? A good way to know is to spend some time on the 3-D course. Shoot at different distances to determine how far you can shoot and still maintain a high percentage of shots in the vital areas. Now add some other factors into the equation such as wind, steep terrain, and thick vegetation. Can you still maintain that maximum effective range? Can you make the shot with all your hunting clothing and a heavy pack strapped to your back? Practicing at a 3D shoot will help you answer those questions.
There are a few things that you can bring along at 3D shoots that will make for a better experience. First, a good pair of Binoculars will help you identify the vital areas on a target. Second, an arrow gripper and arrow lube will help you pull arrows from a sticky target and keep you from getting blisters on your hands. Check your local Pro-Shop for these items.
3D shoots can be fun for the whole family. Chances are you’ll see a lot of families, including women and children, with a bow and arrow in tow. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors while having some fun and preparing to Make the Shot in 2009.
